That both I and you have had to travel and trudge through this long round is owing to our not discovering, not penetrating four truths. What four? It is the teaching we used in our monastery in Thailand. The Theravada school of Buddhism regards this sutta as the quintessence of the teaching of the Buddha.

This booklet has been made available through the voluntary efforts of many people for the welfare of others. Note on the Text: The first exposition of the Four Noble Truths was a discourse sutta called Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta — literally, 'the discourse that sets the vehicle of the teaching in motion'. Extracts from this are quoted at the beginning of each chapter describing the Four Truths.
The reference quoted is to the sections in the books of the scriptures where this discourse can be found. However, the theme of the Four Noble Truths recurs many times, for example in the quotation that appears at the beginning of the Introduction. Get A Copy. Paperback , 74 pages. For both the beginner, and the seasoned Buddhist the description of the Four Noble Truths describe Buddhism's approach to a happier life. That approach too often gets lost and forgotten about in Buddhist literature. Learning to see things as impermanent, learning not to identify with your thoughts and feelings, and learning to see things just as they are.

I thought the descriptions of the first three Noble Truths were excellent, simple, clear, and useful. The book failed to simply say what each part of the Eight Fold Path was beyond the name of the part and what people do to strive towards it.
Instead there are what seems to meta observations from the author, reflections on having lived it, but without tying those reflections to a context where they could be understood.
It is still an excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone who is Buddhist or who has an interest in Buddhism. There seem to be several editions of this book floating around on GoodReads. The edition I read is about 70 pages and can be obtained for free as a PDF from buddhanet. Oct 01, Derek James Baldwin rated it it was amazing.
A succinct and easily readable summary of the heart of the Buddha's teaching, the only real weakness being a bit of a lack of examples and metaphors that could really hammer home the key points. As an introduction to the Four Noble Truths it probably also is guilty of a lack of precision which could disillusion some, i.

A simple and clear approach to understand the Four Noble Truths. May 26, Laura rated it it was amazing. Great little booklet and terrific at introducing Buddhist ideas.
Will definitely re-read this one! Jun 10, Britt rated it really liked it. Very good. I needed the insight. It was tremendously helpful in teaching how to let go. May 26, Shaant Minhas added it. A very practical book about Buddhism. Imo, there is way too much philosophizing around Buddhism these days.
Too much focus on "emptiness" and whatnot. And if one escapes out of the valley of philosophizing, they get stuck in the mindfulness moment that is the new buzz these days. What a lot of people buddhist and non-buddhist seem to miss is that mindfulness is just one part of the whole of Eight-fold Noble Path.
Without the 7 other very important aspects, we are not practicing the noble way o A very practical book about Buddhism. Without the 7 other very important aspects, we are not practicing the noble way of living.
I also loved the discussion of about problem of desire, it's types and solutions about it. Ajahn Sumedho also discusses the very important topic about being too critical of We moderners are too critical of ourselves, of our parents, of our friends, of our institutions, of our country and life in general. I would suggest this book to anyone who is going through a bad phase in life and is not able to see light anywhere.
Midway into chapter two and I was already feeling better about myself, people and life in general. Apr 23, bia rated it really liked it Shelves: buddhism.

Jul 01, Bruce rated it it was amazing. Excellent book with detailed Buddhist ideas. Easily allowed me to learn more. Jan 07, Michael Heggemann rated it liked it. I found this book to be very helpful - for the first half.
In my opinion, the coverage of the first two of the Noble Truths was very succinct and understandable. If the second half of the book were the same, I would have given it four stars. However, I found the coverage of the 2 final Noble Truths to be a bit muddled and the writing a bit more diffuse than in the first half. The second half of the book just didn't "click" for me. Your mileage may vary. Aug 17, Sankalp rated it really liked it.
You usually just find a listing of the 4 noble truths, and then you move forward. The 4 noble truths are considered the basics of Buddhism, and is often overlooked for more advanced theories.
In this book, Ven. Sumedho refuses to dismiss the 4 noble truths as primitive, and instead emphasises them as the core teachings of Buddhism. Good elaboration on the truths and the insights behind them!
Oct 09, Jeremy rated it liked it. While I appreciated the very positive and upbeat tone of the book, it felt more like listening to someone conversing with you on the subject of the truths than a book about them.

Because they bring no benefit, no advancement in the Holy Life, and because they do not lead to dispassion, to fading, to ceasing, to stilling, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbana. That is why I have not told them.
