Both tests consist of a series of questions designed to measure the competencies of nurses at the start of their practice. Both tests must be written at a designated testing facility within Canada.

The Exam Preparation and Review course is 10 full days of study including a mock examination and feedback day and while schedules may vary by location, classes are typically held one day per week. This allows for increased individual learning and preparation time between classes. Because the course is stretched over months leading up to exam sessions, it is important to inform your case manager as soon as you know when you intend to write the exam.

Tuition Assistance may be available to those who qualify and you are encouraged to speak to your case manager if you are concerned about the cost of this course. The cost of this course also includes a comprehensive study guide. In addition to the registration exam, applicants to the CNO must successfully complete a separate jurisprudence exam designed to evaluate knowledge and understanding of the laws, regulations, and College by-laws, practice standards and guidelines that govern the nursing profession in Ontario.

Once the application has been submitted and fees paid, the CNO will send information about how to access the secure testing site. You must provide an email address to the College to receive information about your jurisprudence exam. This email address must be unique to you i. Visit the CNO Examinations section for more about the registration and jurisprudence exams, including fees, refund policies and special accommodation requests.
