Twelve-year-old Eon is in the running to become the next Dragoneye, the intercessor between man and the energy dragons. Eon has a secret: Eon is actually Eona, a year-old girl forced by qualification to live her life as a boy. Females are forbidden to use Dragon Magic and her consequences would be dire if she were ever discovered. Worse than being female, she is also a cripple, which puts her beneath the other Dragoneye contenders. Now, Eona must hide her femininity and transcend her disability to avoid suspicion, all while being caught in the middle of a political battle for power divided by the emperor and the ruthless Lord Ido. Eon has come out as "Eona" and admitted she was a girl all along. Luckily, people have accepted this, and she has become a Dragoneye. The only issue is that she cannot control her power. Every time she tries to bond with her Mirror Dragon, she becomes a conduit for the ten spirit dragons whose Dragoneyes were murdered by Lord Ido.
In addition, Sethon has declared himself emperor and killed Prince Kygo's infant brother giving him only one threat. Eona must stop him now or die. While trying to save herself and Lord Ido she kills Dillon using the death chant and steals the black folio. Later it's used to free the dragons from their bonds to the Imperial Pearl- the dragons were forced to serve the ruling Emperor through a deal they made between themselves. However, if both Lord Ido and Eona were to take the dragons power at the moment of freeing them they would kill the dragons and they would be considered gods from the large amount of power that they would possess.
When freeing the dragons Ido tries to steal the dragons power, but is destroyed in the process one human can't handle all of the dragons power by them self because Eona refuses to help Ido steal the power, despite Ido trying to convince her otherwise.
