Text is too small for being written on such a large page. And it is written in two columns. Very poor format overall, annoying to read like this. I feel like I'm in school and reading a text book.
Not a good book format to buy for pleasure reading. For me, Dante is like St Augustine. His world view is not the small province of one man's life but the vast continent of souls who died but live on in a dialogue about morality. His allusions and metaphors are rich and require patience and research by the reader.
The Divine Comedy not something to be read once and quickly then put down. It is a psalter for poets, humanists, and historians: intended to be recited, contemplated and revisited. To be honest, I don't know any other translations than Mandelbaum's. I can say, however, he employed the 10 syllable blank verse which sounds natural to modern English speakers. When I recite the verses to myself, I speak each line in bursts separated by caesuras in midline where appropriate e.
The paperback version that is linked to the hardbound version is a completely different translation, so it is a mistake that these were linked at all. To make matters worse, the reviews for the hardbound copy are shown when you look at the reviews for the paperback, so it gives the illusion people like the paperback, when they are praising the hardbound copy of the book.
In addition, the format of the book with faint and very small type will make it a headache producing read for some people. This may be a perfectly wonderful translation, but I'll never know.
My bifocals simply aren't up to the task of reading pages of 6-point type. Still looking for a readable version Dante is part of my "Life Curriculum," books that I read and reread throughout my years, inorder to establish a good basis for thinking and believing. They are supposed to help me live a "good" life, a moral and faithful life. This translation by Mendelbaum is exceptional.
It adheres to the poetic spirit of the epic, as well as the intended meaning. In this edition, the notes at the back of the book are helpful in understanding the contemporary politics that Dante is often referring to, as well as little known personalities.
This edition is a pleasure to hold in your hands, beautiful format and font. It also has copies of older artistic engravings that actually help in understanding the story. If you are looking for a one volume translation of Dante's Comedy, buy this one.
