A Mat Rempit is a Malaysian term for "an individual who participates in immoral activities and public disturbance with a motorcycle as their main transport", usually involving underbone motorcycles, [1] colloquially known as Kapcai , or scooters. Mat Rempits are not involved in street racing but rather go against each other for cheap thrills and to rebel against authorities while some of them perform stunts for fun, such as the wheelie, superman lying flat on the seat , wikang , and scorpion standing on the seat with one leg during a wheelie. The word "Rempit" comes from "ramp- rev -it" ramp the throttle. According to Kamus Dewan , the definition of "Rempit" is "the act of whipping with a cane". Mat Rempits usually travel in groups and create disturbance in bustling city centres on weekend nights.

Police crack down on Malaysian stunt bikersWednesday, April 22nd, The police have declared war on Mat Rempits, the young Malaysian bikers who race and perform dangerousstunts on the streets and are also associated with crimes like drug-trafficking and robbery.
Mat Rempit is a Malay term for the illegal street racers who say they do the stunts to get over the stress of modernsociety. Not all Mat Rempits are involved in street racing; some of them perform stunts such as the wheelie, superman lying flat on the seat , and scorpion standing on the seat with one leg during a wheelie.
Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan Tuesday said that police were carrying out a nationwide crackdown onillegal racers, and vowed to put a stop to all their activities, including crimes they commit. Hassan told Sin Chew Daily he had directed all state police chiefs to take effective measures to remove thiscancer of the society.
He stressed that the activities of Mat Rempit gangs have given rise to a sense of insecurity among the public butthe current police blitz will ensure that those who are in contempt of the law are punished.
Federal Criminal Investigation Department Director Bakri Zinin said there are several reasons why youngsters areinvolved in illegal street racing. The youngsters claim there is no proper place for them to relax during their spare time. Zinin said it was very difficult to track down these people as the police could only take action according to the law. An official statement released Tuesday said that 77 operations were conducted against the Mat Rempit sinceJanuary with of the bikers being arrested.
