The son of a well-to-do cloth merchant family Six, Jan studied liberal arts and law in Leiden in , he became the son-in-law of the mayor of Amsterdam , Nicolaes Tulp , in , when he married Tulp's daughter Margaretha.
Thanks to his father-in-law, he became magistrate of family law and various other appointments on the city council becoming mayor of Amsterdam himself in at the ripe age of Six was good friends with the poet Joost van den Vondel and the painter Rembrandt van Rijn , during the forties.
Six remained a devotee of the arts all his life and wrote plays himself, the most famous being Medea , published in , Onschult in In the same year the Dutch translation of Baldassarre Castiglione's Il libro del Cortegiano was dedicated to Six, his collection of paintings, drawings and other artefacts were popular in his lifetime. This collection was handed down generations to the couple Lucretia Johanna van Winter and Hendrik Six whose extensive art collections were combined when they married in and are known collectively as the Six Collection, though paintings were from the Van Winter family.
The paintings that Lucretia Jans took with her on her marriage, were only half of her father's extensive collection that itself had been known and put on display for a half century; the other half went to her sister Anna Louisa.
A few of those paintings can still be seen in Museum Van Loon , but the rest of the other half of the Van Winter collection was sold by Van Loon heirs in to Gustave baron de Rothschild in Paris ; the Six collection has been the subject of controversy in the Netherlands for decades, because though the house on the Amstel received subsidy from the Dutch government and was open to the public for visiting hours, the house was always used as a home, the number of visitors was limited.
The dispute has been resolved and the top pieces are lent to the Rijksmuseum several months every other year. The Six collection is still curated by descendants of Jan Six. Jan Six X is the present Baron, has been curator since Jan Six XI is a well-known art art dealer.
The box set consists of four CDs containing singles, album tracks, non-album singles and B-sides , as well as unreleased outtakes, alternate versions and demos, it includes two DVDs: the first is of their unreleased 9 January performance at the Cirkus arena in Stockholm for MTV Unplugged. The box set was created to celebrate twenty years since the release of Roxette's debut studio album Pearls of Passion , its spine contains the words "It was twenty years ago today Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ".
It's like a coffee table thing, it's really big, page booklet and stuff. The songs featured on the box set stretch back to Roxette's first single, " Neverending Love ", to new songs recorded in June for the compilation, "One Wish" and "Reveal"; these songs were the first new tracks recorded by the duo following Fredriksson's brain tumour diagnosis in The only internationally-released single to be omitted from the box set is " Fireworks ", from Crash!
The song has never appeared on any of the duo's compilation albums. In an interview with The Daily Roxette in , Gessle was asked why the song has been ignored, replying: "I guess it just wasn't big enough. There are so many other tracks. And on The Rox Box , we decided to use demos and other uplifting stuff instead.
The other DVD contains the duo's complete set from their MTV Unplugged concert, which had remained unreleased until this point, although three songs from the show appeared on their compilation Rarities: " Joyride ", "The Look" and "Dangerous".
Markus Larsson of Swedish publication Aftonbladet was critical of the box set's length, but praised the duo's songwriting and vocal performances on the first two CDs, writing: "Even Satan knows the melodies Per Gessle wrote during Roxette's peak, they were the most irresistible blend of hooks and power-pop , and let's not forget Miss Marie's delectable vocals , which illuminated every single hit.
